Back in Latin America a few months earlier, I was recommend by Will, our bubbly Tucan overland truck driver to take a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta...so here I am, driving into the airport of Maun, and checked in.
Something pleasant happened, as there were 4 other passengers joining us, making a full plane, we were all given a discount of nearly 40% as a result. Not expected, but the honesty is terrific.
Our ernest young pilot gave a briefing in the office, then a little walk to our 8 seater, single prop aeroplane.
Soon Maun was under our wings, revealing a lighlty populated small town on the south eastern edge of the vast delta.
A couple of minutes later, whilst still climbing, we passed the Village of Boro , where I took the Mokoro from, just couple of days ago....
Gradually, the vast expanse of the delta were on display 360 degrees, a full surround. It is also customary for the pilot to point out objects along the way using the 12 o'clock co-ordinates.
Can anyone pick out any animals here....
As we were clicking away with our cameras, enjoying the views and the occasional remarks by our young pilot. Then, he suddenly blurted out, "Rhinos at 11 o'clock".....soon it was 10, then 9 o'clock as we flew, the pilot banked and circled. Two dots on the ground, was all I could make out, and lens zoomed.......
Sure enough, after blowing them up on the screen later....two rhinos.
I was really amazed with his ability to locate and point out animals as well as flying the plane, so far ahead of us, being able to identify what animals they were. He sure has sharp eyes.
What was equally amazing was, there were only twelve wild Rhinos in Botswana left, and here I was, privileged enough to capture two with my lens, flying at about 1500 feet up. Everything seems to line up for this one to come out as clear as it is !!
The tracks were either animals' or mokoros.
A herd of buffalos.....I think !!
Oooh, I don't like this banking angle........
Some rampaging elephants....
Some wider channels for speed boats...
A lone tree....
Sadly, one hour came to an end.
And here was our flight path, a loop of about 200 Km.
All I need then was a 4x4 trip into the delta.
